Odell Beckham Jr. Turns Heads at Giants Camp, Cites LeBron James for His NFL Comeback

Odell Beckham Jr. is back with the New York Giants, but nostalgia will not guarantee him a roster spot. The 33-year-old wide receiver is fighting to extend his NFL career after sitting out the entire 2025 season. So far, his training camp performance has given the Giants plenty to consider.

Beckham has produced several impressive moments during camp and earned first-team opportunities with quarterback Jaxson Dart. He also has a clear idea of how he wants to approach this stage of his career. Instead of trying to recreate his younger self, Beckham is looking toward LeBron James as an example of how an aging superstar can adjust and remain effective.

The comparison fits Beckham’s current situation. He is not the 22-year-old rookie who became an instant NFL sensation with spectacular catches and explosive speed. He is now trying to show that experience, technique, separation, and smart route running can keep him valuable in a crowded Giants receiving corps.

Giants coach John Harbaugh expects Beckham to play against the Minnesota Vikings in New York’s preseason opener on August 15.

Beckham Is Making His Case at Giants Training Camp

OBJ / IG / Beckham put together consecutive strong practices during the Giants’ training camp in West Virginia.

ESPN reported that he caught four passes during live drills in one session. One of his best moments came when he beat a defender, caught a pass from Dart, and accelerated down the right sideline.

The veteran also worked his way into first-team reps with Dart on consecutive days. Harbaugh did not overstate Beckham’s progress, describing the opportunities as part of the normal movement of camp. Still, he acknowledged that Beckham was working hard and making strong plays when opportunities came his way.

Those reps matter because Beckham is not returning as a guaranteed starter. He is competing for one of the final receiver spots on the Giants’ 53-man roster. ESPN reported that Braxton Berrios, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Dalen Cambre are among the players battling with Beckham for those jobs.

The wider receiver room includes Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, and rookie Malachi Fields. That leaves Beckham with little room for an average summer. He needs to give the coaching staff a clear football reason to keep him when the final roster cuts are made.

Plus, Harbaugh has also noticed improvement as camp has progressed. Before the Vikings game, the Giants coach said Beckham looked good, was in shape, and had handled every practice rep expected of him. Harbaugh added that the veteran appeared to be getting stronger each day.

LeBron James Gives Beckham a Model for Aging Differently

Beckham understands why people question what he has left. Speed, explosiveness, and quick reactions matter at wide receiver, and those qualities become harder to maintain as players move deeper into their 30s. Beckham’s answer is not to pretend that age changes nothing.

Instead, he pointed to LeBron James. Beckham noted that James once took off from around the free-throw line during his younger days but now relies on a different version of his game. The athletic approach has changed, yet James has continued performing at a high level.

“LeBron James used to take off before the free-throw line,” Beckham said while discussing his own evolution. He then explained that James now plays differently yet remains effective, before adding a direct statement about himself: “I believe that I can play at a high level.”

Beckham Still Has to Earn His Giants Homecoming

OBJ / IG / Beckham said he may not receive 10 or 12 targets in a game anymore. His focus is on what he can do with five or six opportunities and how he can help teammates around him.

Beckham’s return carries obvious emotional weight because New York is where his NFL story began. The Giants selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He quickly became a star and surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in four of his first five seasons.

The relationship eventually ended with a trade to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Beckham later joined the Los Angeles Rams and won Super Bowl LVI, although a knee injury ended his night before halftime. He later played for the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins before stepping away from NFL action.

His most recent complete season came with Baltimore in 2023 under Harbaugh. Beckham finished that season with 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns. His 2024 run with Miami produced only nine receptions for 55 yards across nine games.
