Dustin Poirier Eyes Boxing Move but Remains ‘Stuck in UFC Purgatory’
Dustin Poirier’s retirement has not stopped discussion around his fighting future. Boxing interest continues to surface, yet UFC contract obligations keep any move outside MMA out of reach.
Even after stepping away from active competition, his situation remains tied to the organization, shaping what comes next.
Poirier, former UFC lightweight interim champion known as “The Diamond,” spoke about his contract during the “Deep Waters” stream. He confirmed multiple fights still exist on his UFC deal, blocking outside appearances.
He said, “Man, I still have fights left in my contract with the UFC. I’m stuck in purgatory, so I can’t go out and do nothing. And if I could, I don’t even know if I would, but boxing has always been something I wanted to do.”
Boxing Interest and Zuffa Boxing Setup

Instagram | @dustinpoirier | Despite retiring, Dustin Poirier remains under UFC contract, preventing him from pursuing his interest in boxing.
Poirier continues to express interest in boxing. TKO Group introduced Zuffa Boxing and held five events at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. The structure could support crossover fights. UFC leadership, however, rejects MMA-to-boxing movement.
Poirier reflected on prior discussions: “Bro, I’ve been down this road before. They don’t want any crossover. No. They want to be taken seriously. Plus, if they let one guy do it, every guy and girl on the roster is going to try to do this.”
During the “Deep Waters” stream, a fan suggested a Nate Diaz vs Poirier boxing match under Zuffa Boxing rules. Poirier responded directly, “I’ll sign the contract here on air.”
Poirier retired in December after a BMF title fight against Max Holloway, where he lost by unanimous decision. He earned recognition through knockout wins over Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Bobby Green.
Contract restrictions continue to define Poirier’s current path, keeping boxing opportunities on hold despite ongoing interest and public demand.
