Top 5 College Football Teams for the 2025 Season Ranked

College football is about to get wild in 2025. After two years of Big Ten dominance, the SEC is ready to punch back, and Texas is leading the charge. With 41 bowl games and the national championship kicking off August 23, the stage is set for one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.

Let’s break down the top five teams you need to watch:

Texas

College football’s spotlight is about to hit Arch Manning. After sitting behind Quinn Ewers for two seasons, Manning now owns the Texas offense. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has handed him the keys, and the Longhorns are betting big on their new QB to bring a title back to Austin.

The offensive line is still getting sorted, but the weapons around Manning are scary good. Ryan Wingo should break out, CJ Baxter is healthy again, and the backfield is stacked. The receivers room lost some talent, but a few key transfers are in to help out.

Penn State

This is the year James Franklin has been building toward. They were close last season, and now, with Ohio State, Michigan, and Oregon all reloading, the path is wide open in the Big Ten.

Penn State / IG / With fresh transfers, Penn State is one of the best teams to watch this season.

Drew Allar is back and skipped the NFL to take another swing at a title. New transfers like Trebor Pena and Kyron Hudson add speed and hands to the offense. The O-line is stacked, and running backs Singleton and Allen are ready to power this team.

On defense, Jim Knowles joins from rival Ohio State and brings a tough, smart style to a unit that was already elite. The Lions look locked in.

Ohio State

Don’t count out Ohio State. Sure, they lost a mountain of talent to the NFL, and both coordinators are new, but this team reloads like no one else. Brian Hartline is calling the offense now, and former NFL head coach Matt Patricia is running the defense.

Julian Sayin steps in at quarterback, and he has got the best receiver in college football, Jeremiah Smith, catching passes. CJ Donaldson brings power at running back after transferring from West Virginia. The defense has holes, especially up front, but Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles give them two strong anchors.

With games against Texas and Penn State at home, the Buckeyes could make another big run.

Georgia

College football’s other giant, Georgia, is not used to coming in with questions, but 2025 brings plenty. Kirby Smart’s crew is deep, but there is work to do. Gunner Stockton now leads the offense, and his start in the Sugar Bowl last year gave him a big boost heading into this season.

Georgia / IG / Don’t sleep on Georgia. They thrive when people doubt them.

The Dawgs struggled to run the ball last year, and only one starter is back on the offensive line. But with top talent in the trenches and backs like Nate Frazier ready to roll, the run game could bounce back fast. On defense, the secondary looks sharp with KJ Bolden and Daylen Everette, and linebacker CJ Allen leads a unit that is raw but rising.

Clemson

Clemson got its swagger back. After three seasons out of the playoff picture, they stormed back in 2024 by winning the ACC. The Tigers now return 14 starters and have a clear shot at another national title. Dabo Swinney kept the core intact and finally embraced the transfer era.

Cade Klubnik turned the corner at QB last year and has playmakers around him, such as Antonio Williams and Bryant Wesco. Freshman Gideon Davidson might be the next star at running back, and the O-line brings back four starters. The defense fell off in recent years, but new coordinator Tom Allen is looking to fix that fast.

TJ Parker and Peter Woods give the front line some real bite. Clemson is dangerous again.
